About

I’ve been involved in cheerleading since around age 10. I grew up in Geneva, New York, starting on Geneva’s local Pop Warner team before commuting — and eventually relocating within Upstate New York — to train with multiple programs.

At 16, I moved to Miami to cheer, and later work for one of the top programs in the world, Top Gun All Stars. During this time, I competed at the highest level — winning the World Championship three times and placing second twice. I also coached a team to win The Summit, along with several other major national championship events.

In addition, I worked for Camp Woodward — a world-renowned action sports camp with cheerleading as one of its core programs. I traveled to multiple Woodward locations for consecutive summers as a Cheer VIP/Guest Coach, spending multiple weeks at each location. These experiences gave me the opportunity to learn from and work alongside a wide range of elite coaches and athletes, and helped shape my ability to adapt to different coaching styles, athlete needs, and training environments.

In 2019, I received a coaching job offer in Perth, Australia, where I lived for six years on a sponsored working visa, eventually transitioning to a Global Talent (858) visa. While there, I coached and choreographed across multiple programs, including coaching a team to become back-to-back Australian National Champions — and Grand National Champions in 2023 (the highest division score in the country).

Throughout 2024, and full-time in 2025, I worked independently through my own coaching and choreography business — guest coaching, providing virtual services, and consulting for programs across Australia and New Zealand. I’m proud to say I’ve worked with over 30 programs across Australia, both virtually and in person. Before returning to the U.S., I also spent two months in Dubai coaching cheerleading.

Since returning to the USA in September 2025, I’ve continued working with multiple programs across the country through in person and virtual guest coaching, choreography and consulting. While I’ve loved traveling and guest instructing, I felt ready to be in the gym more consistently — building athletes long-term and making a deeper impact with everything I’ve learned over the years. Most recently, I signed on to coach with New York Icons in Rochester, NY.

Returning to Upstate New York after years abroad feels full-circle. I’m excited to work with athletes from the same region that raised me, and to bring the same level of structure, care, and high standards that helped shape my career.

  • With over a decade of coaching experience, I’ve worked with athletes across a wide range of ages, levels, and competitive environments — through team training, choreography, private lessons, and program development.

    My background includes working with:

    • Worlds-level teams

    • Division I & Division II programs

    • Varsity and Junior Varsity squads

    • Rec and prep teams

    • Regional, national, and international teams

Coaching and choreographing internationally has helped me adapt quickly across different programs, cultures, and competitive standards — while keeping communication clear and expectations aligned.

No matter the setting, my approach stays the same: meet athletes where they’re at, bring structure and direction, and keep a high standard of professionalism, care, and long-term development.

  • JANET BARSING, PARENT
Josh has been working with my 13-year-old daughter Rose as her private coach in both tumble and flying. Josh is a phenomenal coach, with so much patience and guidance and a personal cheer squad for my daughter. He has such belief in her and it shows by how far she has come under his guidance and coaching.

If you are looking for a professional coach with a role model attitude and a total belief in your cheerleader’s ability—100% Josh is your coach.

  • MELISSA GRAINGER, PARENT
Josh is an incredible coach. He has coached my daughter from the very first day she walked into a cheer gym at age 7 and a complete novice right through to now—age 11, Level 4.

He is patient, supportive, encouraging, consistent, knowledgeable and an exceptionally talented athlete and coach.

He gets to know each and every athlete he coaches and mentors and is aware of their individual strengths and weaknesses, which ensures he is able to get the very best out of them—not only in regards to their skills but also in their personal confidence and self-belief.

We have even changed gyms yet still sought out Josh at his current club for private lessons.

His guidance of my daughter’s cheer journey—preparing her mentally and physically for every step—has been invaluable in shaping her as an athlete, and we are so grateful and thankful to have had him as her coach.

Josh Boatwright is the most positive person we have ever met—the true definition of a cheer coach.

  • AMY CRITCHER, ATHLETE
It was such an amazing experience having Josh choreograph our routine. He was patient and supportive with a large group which consisted of a wide variety of skill set and age (14–44!!). His ideas and vision came together seamlessly with everybody’s strengths and weaknesses in mind.

As an athlete but also a parent with her daughter in the same team, we were all very well looked after and Josh was a gem to work with on all levels.

  • NATASHA HERNE, ADRENALINE CHEER ELITE
Josh Boatwright brought an electrifying energy to our gym, leaving an indelible mark on our team. His professionalism and passion for cheerleading were evident from the start, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Josh’s meticulous approach ensured every aspect of our routines was perfected to the highest standard. His expert guidance and positive attitude fostered a supportive atmosphere, empowering our team to excel.

We cannot recommend Josh Boatwright enough. If you’re looking to elevate your cheerleading performance, Josh is the choreographer to call.

  • JOURNEY HIPWOOD, INSPIRE ATHLETICS
We absolutely loved having Josh at Inspire to help at our cheer camp. He choreographed 4 pyramids and also choreographed our Senior 5s routine. Josh was so patient with the athletes and brought so many good vibes into the gym and our cheer camp. We are so excited to have him back soon!

  • ANNABELLE GALATI, ATHLETE
Josh is a great coach and I have known him for almost 5 years, and he has coached me for 3 years and has taught me so much and I have come so far. And at the end of the day, it was him that pushed me to get where I am now.

    Thanks Josh!

  • KAHLI, PARENT
My daughter started working with Josh this year doing flyer privates, and the insane amount of growth—even in the very first lesson—has been amazing to see! His patience and encouraging nature definitely works to bring results. Always happy, smiling, never rushing, would regularly go over the time slot until he was finished, just always showing he wanted her to succeed even though we were from a different gym.

Forever grateful for the experience and knowledge given!

  • LARA BIRD, ELITE ALL STARS (VIDEO REVIEW SERVICE)
We used Josh for 5 routine reviews. His turnaround time was super fast and he had some great suggestions to help us improve our routines on the scorecard for future competitions this season.

For a small club that doesn’t have the funds to bring in a choreographer, this was a cost-effective way to get some honest and specific feedback. Thanks Josh!

  • BRONTE MILES, EVOLVE ALL STARS
Josh is an exemplary guest coach who brings both professionalism and passion to the world of cheerleading. His wealth of knowledge is evident in his ability to run tumble clinics catering to beginners learning cartwheels all the way to advanced tumblers perfecting full twisting layouts.

Beyond his expertise, Josh demonstrates remarkable patience with the kids, fostering a supportive learning environment. Josh also worked our Summit routine. His experience has been invaluable, providing great inspiration to the girls. We are incredibly grateful for his contributions and look forward to future collaborations. Thank you, Josh!

  • ALLY WARREN, PARENT
Josh is a fantastic coach. He is always encouraging and supporting Ava through her tumbles and pushing her to be her absolute best.

Ava has had Josh as a team coach and also for private tumbling, and I would recommend his coaching expertise to anyone.

  • ADDYLYNN, ATHLETE
I first met Josh when I was about to turn 5 and I had a dream to be a cheerleader. My parents bought me lessons with Josh to help with my flying and tumbling! I’m now 10 and have had so much progression thanks to Josh, having the opportunity to go to Nationals and now Summit.

Josh and I had fun together and would have the best music for dance moments, but we also knew how to get serious and put in hard work. I’ve grown up with Josh being a coach in my life, and while I’m not fully grown yet, I know that I have the right start. Josh believed in me even when I was a little scared.

I’m so grateful to Josh and my parents.

  • KIM AND ROB LEES, PARENTS
Josh’s patience and care with Addy, working together on her flying and tumbling (in particular her back handsprings) from 4 years–9 years old, built her confidence and her love of cheer early on. We always knew she was safe and ensuring any skills were only attempted once Josh knew she had the prerequisites nailed.

Josh encouraged Addy through kindness, resulting in Addy being excited to attend extra classes with a drive to attain and perfect skills.

Josh regularly provided feedback to us as Addy’s parents, in addition to giving Addy stretch and drill homework. The mix of hard work but with a smile, throwing in fun, is what kept our small cheerleader loving her time with Josh.
